I ran across a press release today about the ABC Canada Literacy Foundation's family literacy day. From the release:
Members of the Lee family of Calgary and their neighbours are the lucky winners who will enjoy a personal visit from Canadian children's author Robert Munsch during their own ABC CANADA Family Literacy Day(TM) party on Saturday, January 21. The Lees were the winners in a national contest conducted by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation where Canadian families from anywhere in the country could write in and tell ABC CANADA about the party they had planned to kick off the week in which Family Literacy Day(TM) (January 27) occurs. Family Literacy Day(TM), now in its eighth year, is supported by Founding Sponsor Honda Canada Inc., and celebrates parents and their children reading and learning together on a daily basis. Robert Munsch is honorary chair of the program that sees libraries, schools, literacy organizations and families across the country having special reading circles and parties in support of Family Literacy Day(TM). For more information on Family Literacy Day(TM), including special reading tips and games, visit the ABC CANADA website: http:// www.abc-canada.org.
ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation is a national charity committed to promoting adult and family literacy to the general public and to the private sector. ABC CANADA's focus is on public awareness programs, providing promotional support to local literacy groups, and conducting research to further the development of a fully literate Canadian population. For more information, visit http:// www.abc-canada.org.
What a great idea! I'm all in favor of families celebrating literacy together. Cheers to the ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and to author Robert Munsch (see The Munschworks Grand Treasury: Stories and Munschworks 4: The Fourth Munsch Treasury). Robert Munsch also has a wonderful website at http://www.robertmunsch.com/.
