The Penderwicks, by Jeanne Birdsall is already a favorite at our house, and the Betsy Tacy series is quickly becoming so.

Thanks for the input, Mrs. T. I agree that The Penderwicks would be a great choice for a personal classic book. I haven't read the Betsy-Tacy books, but I know that many people adore them. Thanks for visiting!

My classics are very similar to yours (Pride and Prejudice and the Secret Garden topping the two lists) and I share your willingness to admit to reading what are essentially *gasp* romance novels. The Betsy/Tacy books were huge favorites of mine growing up, and my daughter is working through them now (interspersed with aventurous "boy" books like the Underland Chronicles). I think you'd probably enjoy them. They grow with the readers in length/difficulty/complexity, as so many of the best series do.
