Happy Birthday, Beverly Cleary

Today is Drop Everything and Read Day, in honor of Beverly Cleary's 90th birthday. Per the Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) website, "National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority." D.E.A.R. day is sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), HarperCollins Children’s Books, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), Reading Rockets, and Ramona Quimby.

Along the same lines, Finding Wonderland links to an NPR interview with Ms. Cleary, and recommends in particular picking up a copy of Dear Mr. Henshaw. Read Alert also links to the NPR article.

So, in celebration of D.E.A.R. day, take some time to drop everything, and just read with your kids. Ms. Cleary would be pleased. Ramona would pleased. And I'm sure that your kids will be pleased, too. Have a great day!
