L. Frank Baum, creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and many of its sequels, was born 150 years ago today in Chittenango, New York. Baum wrote the first 14 books in the series, as well as a collection of short stories. Many other books were written after Baum's death by various writers, most notably Ruth Plumly Thompson. You can read all about L. Frank Baum and the Oz books on Wikipedia. You can also find copies of the older books (including all of Baum's books) online, because they are all out of copyright.
It's not so many children's book writers who have books still in print and popular after 100 years. Happy Birthday, Mr. Baum!
