I received this press release from Reading is Fundamental, and as a fan of RIF and a childhood fan of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series, I thought that it was worth sharing:
Reading Is Fundamental Announces Winners of Nationwide “Choose Your Own Adventure” Class Writing Contest
WASHINGTON—January 17, 2008—Reading Is Fundamental, the nation’s oldest and largest children’s and family literacy organization, invited classes across the country to embark on an adventurous writing journey and participate in RIF’s Choose Your Own Adventure Class Writing Contest, where each student wrote at least one section of the story.
R.A. Montgomery, co-creator and author of the series, judged the stories and selected the Grand Prize Winner, on which he remarked: “Innovative ideas. Exciting. Fast paced. Good choices. This is a fine read.”
The Grand Prize winning entry is Galaxy Hopping, written by Luis Barraza’s grade 5 class at Huntington Park Elementary School in Huntington Park, California. Students in Barraza’s class each won an autographed Choose Your Own Adventure book and bookmark, a “Be Choosey!” button, a RIF prize pack, and a bonus classroom library of 24 books.
“I am very proud of every one of my students, as they put everything they had into the creation of this book,” said Barraza. “On behalf of my entire class, please receive our warmest thanks for offering such an engaging contest that captured the imagination and fostered the creative writing ideas of students throughout the country.”
The runners-up were Amazon Adventure by Krista Kegerreis’s grade 5 class at Lehigh Elementary School in Walnutport, Pa., and The Tomb Robbers by Paul Lasher’s grade 5/6 class at Hinesburg Community School in Hinesburg, Vt. Students in both classes each received a Choose Your Own Adventure book and bookmark, a “Be Choosey!” button, a RIF prize pack, and a bonus classroom library of 18 books. Five additional classrooms received honorable mention classroom libraries of 12 books.
The winning stories are available to read on-line at www.rif.org. Those interested in information on upcoming contests and features can subscribe to RIF’s eNewsletters.
