Program Lets Active Military Parents Record Read-Alouds for Their Children

Happy New Year!! In a press release on Friday, the retail chain Target and the Department of Defense announced that the United Through Reading program is now available to all branches of the armed forces. Under this program, deployed military parents are videotaped reading books aloud. The tapes are then sent to the participant's children, who have the chance to see their absent parent read aloud to them on VHS or DVD. The aims of the program are to strengthen bonds between parents and children, and also to foster the love of reading among children and families. The complete press release is available on DefenseLINK News. You can find more information about the United Through Reading program on the Family Literacy Foundation website.
